How to Use This Guide

This guide is meant to take you from start to finish. Look at ALL THREE TABS. Information is not repeated across tabs. Each tab has different resources that you should look at. Check each one to make sure you haven’t forgotten about a great resource.
If you need additional help, please contact the Reference Desk by phone at (904) 256-1156 or by email at  You can also meet with any of the Librarians individually.

Basic Tips

Family law, also called domestic relations, covers a wide variety of topics.  Some of the topics covered by this guide include: premarital agreements, paternity, marriage, divorce, child custody, child support, property considerations and adoption.  This guide also touches on areas of law that are usually closely connected to family law, such as estate planning and criminal law.

Family law policies and regulations, with few exceptions, are decided by state lawmakers.  It is therefore crucial to family law research to identify the jurisdiction before doing research on a specific problem.  For nationwide policy considerations, jurisdictional issues are not as important.

These links direct you to the Florida Statutes online.  The Library also has the Florida Statutes in paper.
